In SAP BW, the master data manager generates the master data tables as well as master data update and retrieval routines based on the meta data repository. Many readers have asked as to what exactly does maintaining master data include. Master data management can be looked upon as a series of activities some of which are listed below:
1. MDM includes conducting master data uploads
2. MDM includes finding and generating surrogate keys
3. Master data in BW sits in different hierarchies. MDM ensures technical correctness of the hierarchies
4. MDM provides a user interface for interactive master data maintenance
5. For time dependent master data handling time windows
6. MDM is used in activating master data. This copies the modified master data from modified version to the active version for analysis and reporting
7. Finally, Master data manager, provides access to the master data through BEx analyzer. Such master data can also be exported to other warehousing solutions.
