In a recent study conducted across large enterprises mostly fortune 100 companies, Chief Audit Executives were asked one question "What makes a good internal auditor? No doubt all agreed that internal auditors must have a strong grasp on risks and controls and understanding of probablity and impact. CAEs also agreed that internal auditors also need to be trained on the basics of compliance and auditing.
Here what one CAE had to say "........When I am hiring, I look for individuals with problem solving capabilities, good communication skills with the ability to grasp and learn new things". Others laid stress on an individuals ability to deal with a variety of people and business issues. With many companies having operations globally, CAEs also believed that hiring local internal auditors made sense considering there is no language problem. All said and done, the survey pointed out that internal auditors need to position themselves as being there to help run business more efficiently and effectively. This more often than not can be the decisive factor for a successful internal auditor.
