Corporate Governance Best Practices for Sarbanes Oxley

Post Sarbanes Oxley, every company is attempting for better corporate governance. The road to better corporate governance starts at the top. The senior management of the company needs to take a proactive stance towards enusring investor confidence through better corporate governance. But is good corporate governance a one time goal or a continous goal towards compliance.

The answer is Corporate governance is not just about regulatory compliance. Corporate governance also involves establishing a control framework to cater to all the requirements of internal controls. Corporate governance is aimed at reducing deficiencies in controls, managing risk, both operational as well as strategic risk and reducing the inefficiencies in the business processes. For compliance to be sustainable and cost effective it is important to look at long term SOX compliance rather than short term compliance goals. While short term compliance is more about meeting deadlines, long term compliance aims at not only imporiving controls, but also reducing the overall effort and cost required for controls compliance. Better corporate governance, thus starts with a long term vision from the senior management.
