Installing the SAP R/3 system involves many steps. In one of my earlier posts, I have covered the hardware and software elements involved in a R/3 installation. The main components that are needed for the SAP R/3 installation to work are the SAP central instance, database instance, SAP frontend, dialog and gateway instances if required. One of the most important things companies need to decide before the SAP installation is to whether they want a central SAP system or a standalone database system. In a central SAP system, the system and the database are on a single host. On the other hand in a standalone system, the database and SAP system are on seperate hosts.
The central system installation is suitable for small and medium sized SAP installations and the standalone configuration is suitable for larger SAP installations. Below, I have listed down some of the steps involved in a SAP R/3 installation:
1. The first step is to install the database client software using the SQL Server Setup Program.
2. The second step is to install the R3SETUP Tool using the file R3SETUP.BAT.
3. In this step, one needs install SAP central instance using the R3SETUP tool. This step completes the installation of SAP central instance.
4. The above three steps are also required for installing the Database server software i.e. database server instance and the database client instance also called the dialog instance.
5. Finally, the last step in the SAP R3 installation process is to install the SAP front end programs which can run on the user's machine.
