SAP Basis Administrator - Monitoring the SAP R3 system

System monitoring ensures that SAP is available to end users without any downtime. Normally, an SAP Basis administator monitors the live instances in SAP to ensure that the SAP resources are up and available. In a nutshell, the SAP Basis Administrator is tasked with ensuring SAP system management from a technical perspective.

I have given the SAP Server System Monitoring screen menu path below. This screen can also be reached using the T-Code nSM51. The screen displays all the available instances in the SAP system. An important thing to note is that the SAP Basis system adminstration screen also shows important instance parameters such as online users, batch jobs, database updates etc.

Normally, it is easy to monitor the SAP system by instance. An instance represents the adminstrative unit used to logically describe a set of SAP system components that provides a set of services. Normally, in a SAP installation, there are several instances such as development instance, test instance and of course, the production instance.
