I am covering one of the very basic topics "Logging to SAP" for SAP novices. For a first time user, this would make a lot of sense and clear up any doubts about what is behind the main SAP R/3 log on screen. So here goes, When you click on the SAP icon on your desktop you would be presented with a screen shown
below.

The SAP R/3 as such is a client system. A client is an independent data unit in the SAP. Meaning thereby that each client will have its own master data, transaction data, chart of accounts and customizing parameters. Thus, there will a production client, test client, quality client and so on. Each of them will have a seperate purpose. One thing to remember is that during each user session you can access the data of the client selected during logon.
To be able to access a particular client, you should have a user master record linked to that relevant client. Each logon requires a password. You will note that as you type, the password is hidden i.e. you only see asterisks. The next field is that of Language. Since SAP is available in many languages, you can select the same in this field.
